Many of you have accused me of not conforming for the sake of not conforming but i'm here to tell you that that simply is not true. i'm actually quite good at conforming, sometimes i even prefer it; like when i pee in toilets instead of public places. But for your stupid consumer driven bullshit holidays i cant seem to find reasons to participate, especially this one. That other consumer holiday i can at least find some speckle of substance in. But this one? Seriously, do you know how many diamonds were purchased today? Well, I dont know but I'm sure the figures are grotesque. Here are some other figures that might make you yack, or if you're one of those people who wishes someone would spend money on you today it may send you into a downward spiral of depression and i hope you choke on chocolate.
To those of you in relationships: i hope that you arent counting on v-day baloney to confirm your love and if you are you have no clue what love is.
To my one and only: thank you for not saying "i love you" today, you are my everything.

Hmmm I say that everyday and I bet Dom does too so if he avoids it just for the sake of the day... Well that just don't make no sense to me... To each their own, I say you should love each other and let them know it all the time, but society in general taking time to slow down and pay attention to those things is a plus. A lot of good comes out of it as well... Sales of diamonds is shit, but donations go up around all these holidays, volunteers are usually over capacity at places, and people are generally more pleasant to each other.
So I still need to buy you a chirstmas gift, I should add it to my to do list.
So I wish you a happy valentine's day.

Dan,
he didnt avoid saying "i love you" because it was v-day he just hadnt said it yesterday. My point is that because we are so sure of our love we dont have to say it. and because we practice showing eachother we care all year long we dont need retail holidays to remind us to pay attention to eachother.
And about your volunteer BS i might buy that at x-mas time but not v-day. prove it. and even if it is true you know that there are plenty of negative effects of these holidays. besides if being "pleasant" and "generous" were important to people in this country we wouldnt even need to have this conversation.
why are you, one of the most intelligent people i know, always so quick to defend these stupid holidays?

Because you attack these holidays, that I have seen help many people. I see them make assholes kinder to strangers, now they are still an asshole much of the time, but its great if something can make them try to be more humane even a bit, and perhaps at least think about others.
I have seen hardly any negative really come from them. I am not all religious, but I think a few holidays that have people get time away from work and as a whole the society spends that time with their families as a good thing. I don't really mind the reasoning behind it. If it takes a stupid holiday to make it acceptable to shut down all business and stop the business world for a day or two so many people can have the time to get together great. Many people can't afford to take any time off except the ones businesses force, and holidays it becomes socially unacceptable to make people work on certain days.
Diamonds are retarded, but they are sold far more often for weddings than valentines day.
That act of giving a gift isn't horrible. No it doesn't and love doesn't have to have a special day, but setting certain times assign for things makes sense it is why people make plans for anything.
I think we will always see the different sides on this one.
